At Horizon Honors Elementary School, every student benefits from an educational approach that goes beyond traditional instruction. Rather than reserving advanced teaching strategies for a select group of students, we provide a gifted education program for all learners.
Our classrooms are designed to challenge, inspire, and engage students through meaningful learning experiences that encourage curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Students don't simply memorize facts. They ask questions, solve problems, collaborate with classmates, and make connections across subject areas.
By creating an environment where every child is challenged at the appropriate level, students develop the confidence and skills they need to become lifelong learners.
Students participate in thematic units, hands-on projects, collaborative learning experiences, and real-world problem solving that help them understand how different subjects connect. Rather than viewing math, science, language arts, and social studies as separate classes, students discover how these disciplines work together in everyday life.
ILPs: Personalized Learning for Every Student
No two students learn exactly the same way.
Teachers continually assess each student's progress and adjust instruction to provide the right level of support and challenge. Our educators work closely with students and families to ensure every child is progressing academically while also developing the social and organizational skills needed for long-term success.
Every quarter, each student develops an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) in partnership with their teachers and family.
ILPs establish personalized academic and social goals that help students take ownership of their learning while encouraging reflection, growth, and continuous improvement. Throughout the quarter, teachers monitor progress, celebrate successes, and adjust goals as students continue to develop.
Multi-Age Classrooms & Ratios
Students learn in multi-age classrooms in:
- Grades 1-2
- Grades 3-4
- Grades 5-6
Multi-age classrooms allow teachers to group students by instructional readiness rather than age alone. This flexible approach creates opportunities for students to be appropriately challenged, supports individual growth, and encourages collaboration among learners with varying strengths and experiences.
Students benefit from learning alongside peers who may be working at different levels, helping them develop confidence, leadership, and independence while receiving instruction that meets their individual needs.
Our staffing model allows teachers to provide individualized attention while creating engaging classroom experiences.
Kindergarten:
- Approximately 13 students per teacher
- One classroom teacher and one instructional assistant support each classroom
Grades 1-4:
- Approximately 20 students per teacher
- Two classroom teachers and one instructional assistant support each learning community
Grades 5-6:
- Approximately 30 students per teacher
